Vehicle GPS Tracking FAQ

Questions about your fleet,
routes and connected data.

What is vehicle GPS tracking for field service?

Vehicle GPS tracking connects location updates from a supported tracking source with a map of your service fleet. DreamzFSM brings fleet visibility into a wider workflow that includes dispatch, route planning, trip review and vehicle maintenance.

Is vehicle GPS tracking the same as technician phone tracking?

No. A vehicle tracker reports the vehicle location; a technician app reports the location of the mobile device when that feature is enabled. Those records can differ. Confirm which source is used for each view rather than assuming a person and a vehicle are always together.

Do I need a tracking device or telematics account?

The setup depends on the data you need. Vehicle-based location and diagnostics require compatible tracking hardware or a supported telematics connection. DreamzCMMS publishes a Samsara integration. Confirm vehicle compatibility, account access and the required data before choosing hardware.

How often are vehicle locations updated?

Live-map freshness depends on the device, connectivity, provider and integration settings. There is no single update interval that applies to every fleet setup. Review the timestamp of the last received location before treating it as a current position.

Can GPS information help with routing and dispatch?

Yes. Use vehicle and job locations to plan routes and support dispatch decisions. Review the planned appointments, assigned work and technician availability before changing the route. The nearest vehicle is not necessarily the most suitable team for a job.

Can I review previous trips and driving history?

Yes. The published vehicle-tracking workflow includes recorded trips, routes and speed information. Available history, retention and additional data such as idling depend on the configured tracking service.

Does it support driver safety and crash alerts?

The vehicle-tracking offering includes safety and crash-alert capabilities where the connected hardware and service support them. Confirm the specific event types and notification setup. A reported event needs review and does not, by itself, establish why an incident occurred.

Can vehicle-health information trigger maintenance work?

With configured Samsara workflows, vehicle diagnostics, fault codes and inspection findings can support maintenance alerts and work-order creation. Supported odometer and engine-runtime readings can also update asset information. Agree the mapping and action rules for your fleet.

Can I use an existing telematics provider?

Samsara is a published DreamzCMMS integration. Other providers need a technical review of their APIs, data availability, access and required workflows. Do not assume every tracker or provider works without configuration.

Can I keep customers informed about arrival times?

Yes. Route and arrival information can support customer updates, alongside the appointment and communication workflows. Customer-facing tracking links and specific notification options should be confirmed for your setup. An estimated arrival is not a guaranteed appointment time.

What happens when a tracker loses connectivity?

The office cannot receive a fresh location without a working data connection. Treat any displayed position as the last received location until a newer update arrives. Offline storage and later upload behavior depend on the tracking device and provider.

How does VEDA support a vehicle-tracking workflow?

VEDA can help your team review available vehicle maintenance history, generate inspection checklists, create work orders and summarize completed maintenance. It uses the records and permissions available in your setup; it is not an autonomous driving or emergency-response system.
